Is it easier to qualify as a Dog Trainer or a Personal Trainer? : 24 Aug 2009

I was flicking through an old Marie Clare in a pizza shop (I'm human) the other day and came across an article comparing different things. One of them was the difference between becoming a Dog Trainer and  Personal Trainer.

It takes eight months of part-time training to earn a Certificate III in Dog Behaviour and Training, according to the National Dog Trainers Federation. This includes a study program and 96 hours of practical work.

To become a Personal Trainer takes eight weeks of part time study where you will earn a Certificate IV in Fitness. Practical experience is advised, but isn't compulsory.

Is it too hard to become a Dog Trainer? Or is it too easy to become a Personal Trainer?

I'm inclined to believe it's too easy.

All courses should be drilling candidates on the fact that a Cert IV is merely the first step on the path to becoming a Fitness Professional. They should be hammering the importance of ongoing education and, in an ideal world, you would have to have a certain number of hours experience as an 'apprentice' before you could become accredited.
