Your new HealthyPeople profile can include a video CV and social network links : 31 Jan 2012

We were pleased to be able to let employers know who you are, what sort of work you're interested in and what sort of qualifications and experience you have...but we could do better.

Your new HealthyPeople profile allows you to include a video CV, a photo and links to your relevant social networking and/or web sites.

These days we have so many ways of expressing ourselves professionally that a CV alone no longer needs to be the sole representation of our capabilities.

Why not encourage employers to view your professional twitter feed?
Why not cut together some short clips of you training a client? Giving a presentation? Taking a class?
Have you created a Facebook page? Spruik it!
Do you have a blog? Provide the link to the RSS feed.
Encourage employers to connect with you on LinkedIn! or Google+!
A picture says a thousand words! Upload a photo of yourself that employers can view.

'Do I have to include these images and videos, etc.?'

Not at all, it's entirely your choice.

'This sounds totally AWESOME! How do I get this sorted?'

Log on to HealthyPeople, select the 'Create/edit my profile' link (note: you'll need to have set your location first) then select 'Edit view' and go crazy.

Please share your thoughts, we'd love to hear them.

In the meantime, here's a few video CV examples to get the creative juices flowing...

And one more for laughs...

Physical Education and the New World Order [toilet graffitti] : 08 Jan 2012

I saw this written on the toilet wall in a bar in Melbourne.

Did you ever expect to see the phrase 'P.E.' and 'New world order' used in the same paragraph?

I love the sentiment and the complete randomness of the outburst. This guy really needed to get this off his chest.

wall art

It reads:

"I.T. is not organic and therefore will not be relevant in the new world order. Get a real job like a P.E. TEACHER. Movement will be around forever because of instinct. Why not make money from that."

Word!

An interview with Matt Thom from Fitness Kick. : 03 Jan 2012

What's my definition of an inspirational fitness professional?

Someone that is a positive role model for both industry professionals and the general public in the pursuit of their own success.

Matt ThomMatt Thom is someone that fits this description perfectly. He is co-founder of Fitness Kick @ Flemington (winner of 2007, 2008, 2009 Personal Training Business of the Year awards) which also provides 'not for profit' fitness services for the local community. He has won four world titles in Pairs Fitness with his partner Monica (another inspirational professional). Together they have published three books. He has worked in the industry for more than 15 years as a personal trainer, corporate trainer, presenter, motivational speaker, educator and fitness consultant. He's developed and trademarked over six effective fitness training programs and is the Victorian sensei for Australian Freestyle Kickboxing.

I'm grateful to Matt for his time in answering a few questions for this first blog item for 2012.

---

The Fitness Kick Mission is 'to help millions of people become educated and motivated to take control of their health', can you outline some key achievements to date that are bringing yourself and Monica closer to this goal?

Our mission to help millions of people increase their health and vitality may seem a huge task but Monica and I have always set big goals and high bench marks for ourselves and business. We are getting closer to this goal through the sale of our three Australian Best Selling Books, collectively selling over 15,000 copies. (It could have been millions a few years ago when we were close to signing a US distribution deal then GFC hit and that has put that deal on the back burner for now). Our mission for millions may seem a pie in the sky to some, but everything first has to be a thought before it becomes a reality!! One day, who knows…

Can you tell me a bit about Fitness Kick @ Flemington?

Fitness Kick is really about two things - Results and Service. We have no contracts, no joining fees, no session packs ? just a training system that gets results and a team that will go out of their way to help clients in all facets of their health.

What sort of programs do you have in place to attract and retain Personal Trainers?

Our retention for personal trainers is extremely high. We have trainers who have been with us for 7 years. Trainers choose to work for Fitness Kick because of our in house education and development programs, as well as flexible working hours that they choose. We attract trainers through the HealthyPeople website as well [thanks Matt - D].

Beyond Trainers, what other staff do you employ?

Fitness Kick has an energetic team of 20 vibrant professionals which consist of 11 Personal Trainers (all subcontractors), 4 Reception staff, 2 managers, a financial controller, a nutritionist and a physiotherapist.

Do require any ongoing studies or professional development of your staff?

Education is encouraged and fully supported. The 5 CEC courses I run are free to Fitness Kick Staff. Many professional development programs are paid for by Fitness Kick, like 'Facebook for Business Marketing'.

For Personal Training graduates starting out in their fitness career, what key piece of advice would you give them?

Certificate IV is only a beginning and they should seek a mentorship while constantly furthering their education and their own training. Successful trainers are role models, so 'walk the walk to talk the talk'. Choose a training style or piece of equipment and become and expert at it. It gives you an area of expertise. Also choose and go after a niche that is related to your training methods and equipment. e.g suspension training and rehabilitation works well.

Fitness Kick provides 'not for profit' services to the local community, could you provide a brief description of these programs?

Our community initiatives have been running for 5 years and include a free fitness training program that runs once a week called ‘Keeping Flemington Fit’ as well as Free educational seminars called 'Eat Yourself to Health'.

It's said that 'the secret of success is to double your rate of failure'. Is there any failure you've experienced in the process of building your business that you would share with others?

With our business model, clients must be personal trained to come in and utilise the facilities. In the beginning, we turned more people away than we joined but over the long term we have certainly attracted the right people and the culture is awesome!

What professional affiliations, subscriptions or registrations do you and/or your business have?

I am on the board of the REPS council at Fitness Australia and we meet up once every couple of months. Fitness Kick is also a Business Member with Fitness Australia. We subscribe to UltraFit Magazine and Oxygen Magazine.

What other fitness related businesses are you running at present?

We have 3 other fitness related businesses. We have a company that organises fitness programs in over 150 schools throughout Victoria ranging from boot camps to self defence programs. We also do Corporate Speaking on Wellness and run an online supplements shop at our website.

Soap box moment: What's a topic that really gets you started?

Those ‘bloody’ become a PT in 8 week Ads, but don’t get me started!!!!

Do you have a favourite fitness and/or business tool?

Favourite fitness tool would have to be the War Machine. It is a suspension training tool with a pulley, the best piece of equipment I've ever used. My favourite business software is ‘mind mapping’. Very useful for brain-storming.

If not health and fitness, what would you be doing?

I honestly could not tell you as it’s always been such a big part of my life. Maybe SAS, where you get paid to train!

Could your Facebook get you fired? : 15 Dec 2011

What we share on social networks, at anytime, can have a significant bearing on our success in getting a job as well as potentially costing us a job we already have!

SmartCompany reported recently that '...more than a quarter of 1,255 recruiters surveyed use social networking sites to screen job candidates and more than half of these admitted to having turned away prospective employees based on something they've seen on Facebook or Twitter.'

A conversation I had with a Personal Training studio owner supports this. They regularly use Facebook to screen applicants and on this basis have turned down candidates that were otherwise in line for a job offer! The type of thing they look for include the posting of discriminatory comments and/or the posting of inappropriate pictures (which in our industry could be a photo of you, on a night out, utterly slaughtered).

When it comes to getting a job, it's not all bad. A third of Australian employers who screen social profiles had hired people based on positive things they had seen online.

Industrial relations lawyer Peter Vitale told SmartCompany that most of the information available on social media profiles was fair go for recruiters. ".. if the material is published and people haven't set their security settings to limit who can see what's on their profiles...it's a perfectly legitimate thing to do,".

This does not mean, however, that you're free to 'cut loose' on your workplace or bosses while your privacy settings are set to maximum!

The internet abounds with people who thought they were making comments in private or made a comment as a joke and found themselves back in the job market.

Allow me to illustrate;

In August this year the Fair Work Australia found that abusive comments about a manager were grounds for dismissal. Even though the comments were posted privately, they were seen by other workers in the company and it was considered a threat to the reputation of the company.

A recent dispute between a hairdressing salon employee and their employer found that, while there was a case for unfair dismissal, the decision was based on the limited reach of the original comment alone.

And there is this epic fail circulating the web...

facie fail

Before I wrap it up there is one other way to get yourself in trouble with social networking; overuse on work time. In May this year Fair Work Australia confirmed that 'proof of excessive use of social media during work hours may constitute a valid reason for termination of employment'.

And it's not just the hassle of finding a new job, it's having to discuss with every employer; 'Why did you leave your last job?'.

So remember, when expressing your views online you are doing so to a potentially global audience which is listening 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And, as long as one person has saved your comments, NOTHING can be taken back.

Recognising that employers are making use of social networking as a recruitment tool, use it to your advantage. If you have a passion for health and fitness, natural therapies or nutrition, etc., why not make your social presence reflect this passion (instead of your personal life). A dedicated Facebook page or Twitter profile listed on a CV would help anyone stand out among job applicants.

Changes to the professional registration process : 13 Dec 2011

Our registration for professionals is no longer divided into 'Free' and 'paid'.

Over the last few years we've made a number of changes to the functionality of our website. As a result, where there was once greater distinction between the paid and free registration, there is now a single point of difference - the ability to list yourself for employers to find you. With this in mind we have changed the nature of the professional registration to suit.

More specifically, we have removed;

  • The $33/year fee
  • The 'maximium three months listing over the course of a year'
  • The restriction on the functionality of the site for any registered only professionals

We have added:

  • Cheaper options for getting yourself in front of employers (as little as $6.95 for 7 days of listing - $9.95 for 2 weeks)
  • No limit to the number of times you can list yourself on the HealthyPeople website throughout the year
  • A more streamlined registration process

For those professionals with a current paid registration, the system will not request any payment for listing until the expiry of your paid registration period.

We hope that you'll find this new process easier to understand and easier to use. We look forward to putting you in front of employers when the time is right.

shout outBy early 2012 we are going to be delivering you a revolution in recruitment services. This will not just be ground breaking for the health and fitness industry, it is going to be a first across all industries!

Father's sperm may pass on obesity. [from The Age] : 12 Dec 2011

Did you see this? I grabbed this from The Age in Melbourne on the 5th of this month.

AUSTRALIAN researchers have discovered that the sperm of overweight fathers appears to carry a molecular signal that causes their offspring to inherit obesity.

The preliminary study indicates that obesity in the offspring is more evident and severe in females than males.

The work by the Robinson Institute Research Centre for Reproductive Health, at the University of Adelaide, has so far focused on microRNA expression on the sperm of mice.

The next move will be to recruit people into the study of paternal dietary signals carried in sperm and their impact on offspring.

The research was presented at the World Congress on Human Reproduction in Melbourne, which finished yesterday.

Because the transfer of the obesity factor is a biological process, not a genetic one, a father who loses weight and gets fit is less likely to pass on obesity to his children, according to the research.

A little conversation piece for you to whip out when the time is right.
